Will EIA report commercial or data-center-linked electricity sales growth above 5% year-over-year for calendar 2026, by late 2027?

Electricity and interconnection are the rivalrous complement whose scarcity converts AI demand into sustained rent for power owners rather than for model or app providers.

Margin migrates to chips and power

Two workloads cannot share a megawatt, so compute growth bids up power, grid capacity and siting rights that cannot be designed around. Power producers and infrastructure owners capture durable pricing power and long-dated contracted revenue, while model providers' gross margins compress under inference bills. Capital concentrates in the physical bottlenecks that every contestant in the AI race must pass through, not in the software layered on top.

Value migrates to industry adopters and applications

The current wave of capital spending on chips, data centers and power is a build-out phase that precedes a later phase in which non-AI industries reorganize around the new capability, echoing railroads, electrification and the internet. Once that diffusion happens, the greatest economic value shifts to the industries and application-layer products that embed AI into workflows with measurable returns, not to the infrastructure builders themselves. This side would be confirmed if commercial or data-center-linked electricity sales growth stays below 5% year-over-year for 2026, since that would suggest efficiency and diffusion gains are offsetting raw AI load growth.
